Spinner
A downloadable tabletop game
Description
Spinner is a collaborative worldbuilding and storytelling game all about accepting the creativity of others and spinning tales together.
In this game you will be working together to create a world and tell a story in that world. You will first define what is true about this world and set the stakes of your story. Then you will answer prompt questions to build out the details of this world. In this version the settings "Cozy Coffee Shop" and "Horror In Space" are available for play.
Once the world is built, one player will take on the role of Spinner. They will breathe life into the setting you all worked to create, embodying the non-player characters and describing the environment in beautiful or horrifying detail. The remaining players will create characters that they will embody in the narrative. To create or resolve conflicts by pursuing their goals within the story.
Once the Spinner is selected and the player characters are created you will all be set loose in your world to explore it and change it.
This game should take anywhere from 2-5 hours to play and is recommended to be played with 3-5 people. Additionally, you will need the following materials:
- Paper & pencils
- A deck of playing cards
- 1 six-sided dice (or 1 per player)
- 10-20 small strings
About the Creator
My name is Maddie Veccia. I am a queer game designer and the creator of “Spinner”! I enjoy writing, baking cookies, and playing tabletop games with my friends. I’ve been told I play tabletop games like I’m hotwiring a car, always creating my own rules and additions, so “Spinner” was my chance to finally start from scratch and build a game my way from the ground up. My initial inspiration was the incredible actual-play podcast, “Worlds Beyond Number”–specifically the improvisational worldbuilding of their interlude episodes. In the beginning of this project I knew I wanted to create a game system to facilitate collaborative worldbuilding, but at the time I found myself extremely burnt out and worried if I could do this idea justice. I decided to go for it though and over time was able to learn the importance of rest. “Spinner” is very important to me because it proves that good art doesn’t require a mentally and physically exhausted artist. I can create something I am truly proud of by taking my time and prioritizing myself. For anyone reading this, thank you for being a part of “Spinner”, and I hope my game can bring you as much joy as it has brought me.
